Frequently Asked Questions

General

  • Q: How long are your races?
A: Our main races are 2 or 3 days in length (depending on the location), and each day you can expect an average of 6-12 hrs of paddling, trekking, mountain biking, orienteering, ropes, and more often than not, surprise challenges.
We are also now offering 1 day races at some of our race locations, where you can race the same course on one of the days as the 2 and 3 day racers will race on.

  • Q: What exactly is a "stage" race?
A: A stage race sees all racers begin together each day in a mass start, working their way against the clock through a multi-discipline course to the daily finish line. At the end of the race, each day's race times are added up to figure out the overall winners of the race for each of the categories.

  • Q: What categories do you have in your races?
A: For all sea2summit races, you can race as a solo, team of 2, or team of 4 in single (male or female) and mixed gender (coed) categories.

  • Q: Is there a masters category?
A: Yes. We offer a masters category for solo racers who are at least 45 years old on race day.

  • Q: Is there a cut-off time?
A: Depending on the length of the race on any particular day, there might be a cut-off location and time. You will be informed of this at registration check-in or at one of the racer meetings.

  • Q: Does our team have to stay together?
A: If you are racing as a team, you must remember that this is a team sport and your team should stay together. If there is an incomplete team at any of the checkpoints, you will be required to wait for all members of your team before your passport is checked and you are allowed to proceed. You must cross the finish as a full team or else you will be given a not officially ranked status (NOR).

  • Q: Are there mandatory gear requirements?
A: Yes. To find out the mandatory gear requirements for each of our races please read the mandatory equipment list available for download on each of the race location pages.

  • Q: What is the minimum age to race in a sea2summit?
A: Our minimum age restriction for sea2summit races is 18 years old. If you are under 18, you have previous race experience, and you are racing on a team with one of your parents then we will probably allow you to race. Please contact us directly if this situation applies to you.

Registration

  • Q: Can I transfer my solo entry to someone else?
A: Yes. If you want to transfer your solo entry to someone else, there will be a $25 processing fee to do so. Sea2summit must be informed of this at least 5 days before the race start.

  • Q: Can I transfer our team entry to someone else?
A: Yes. You can transfer team members 2-4 at no charge by using the update team info page of our website. If you want to change the current team captain to a new team captain, there will be a $25 processing fee to do so.

  • Q: Can I change categories after I have registered?
A: Yes. You can change categories any time up to 2 days before the race. To do this you can use the update team info section of our website. This allows you to change the category but not the # of racers on your team.

  • Q: I want to register now to take advantage of the early bird discount but I don't know if I will have a team or not for the race. Can I add team members at a later date?
A: Yes. You can add team members at a later date (up to 2 days before the race). To do so, the new members will have to register online, and then the team captain will have to email info@sea2summit.com with the details of which racers are to be added to your team.

  • Q: If we register as a team of 2 is it possible to change it to a team of 4 at a later date? It so what would be the deadline to do so?
A: Yes. You can add team members at a later date (similar to the previous FAQ).

  • Q: My team of 4 has a member that might not make it to the race. Will our team be able to split up into a team of 2 and a solo or three solos?
A: Yes. You can split your team up at any time. You can also split a team of 4 into 2 teams of 2 if you choose.

  • Q: How do I register with my winning voucher from last year's race?
A: Please download the registration form and mail or fax in along with your payment and the winning voucher.

  • Q: Do I have to sign up for the solo masters category separately?
A: No. Signup up online as a solo and we will automatically put you in the master category.

Race Logistics

  • Q: Do I need a support person for my team?
A: Multi-day Races - Yes. Whether you race as a solo or a team, you must have a support person/crew for all multi-day sea2summit races. Look for the new "supported option" where, for an extra fee, sea2summit becomes your support person.
A: One-day Races - For Mont Ste. Marie and Panorama you will need a support person. For the Shore2Shore race you do not.

  • Q: Do I or does my support team require a 4x4 for your race?
A: A 4x4 vehicle is not required for any of our races.

  • Q: Do Sea2Summit staff take care of transporting my kayak, bike, and gear to the transition area or is that the responsibility of my support staff on race day?
A: Transportation of all your gear is the responsibility of you and your support team throughout the race. If you are renting a boat, sometimes the boat rental company will take care of transporting the boat (pleae ask the boat rental company directly).

  • Q: Does my team require any special climbing (or other types of) certificates for your races?
A: You do not need any special types of certifications for any of the disciplines in any of our races.

  • Q: What type of flashlight is recommended for your races?
A: The best type of flashlight to have as part of your mandatory gear is a headlamp.

  • Q: Can I change my shoes or exchange clothing with my support at the transitions?
A: Yes. As long as when you leave the transition you have all the items on the mandatory equipment list.

  • Q: Are there water stations?
A: No. Sea2summit adventure races are meant to be self-sufficient races so you must bring water with you. We do not supply water anywhere on the race course.

Paddling

  • Q: Do I have to supply my own boat for the race?
A: Yes. For all sea2summit races (one, two, and three day races) you must supply your own boat, paddles, PFD, and throw rope. If you are not bringing your own boat, you can view a list of companies who will rent a boat to you in the registered racer packages available for download on each of the race location pages.

  • Q: What type of boats are allowed?
A: Any type of self-propelled, non-motorized watercraft that does not have oar-locks is allowed. Note however that some sea2summit races require that teams of 2 or 4 paddle in canoes only. Please see the specific race location pages for more details.

  • Q: With regards to canoes, can each teammate have their own (singles) or do we need to paddle in pairs?
A: For all our races that require canoes for teams, your team must paddle in pairs.

  • Q: Do I have to carry my PFD throughout the entire race?
A: No. You can leave your PFD at transition after a paddling stage, but you must wear your PFD for the entire paddling stage.
